Arts in Action invites you to its inaugural Social Action Film Night @ Bella Union with a screening of The Last Survivor, a character-based documentary that presents the stories of genocide Survivors from The Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur, and Congo. By presenting these stories of loss, survival, and hope side by side, the film highlights the commonalities these individuals share both as Survivors and, more broadly, as human beings. THE LAST SURVIVOR 31st May @ Bella Union BOOK ONLINE
“Each Survivor’s story is one of triumph over trauma. When we made the film, our objective was not to dwell on the tragedies of the past, but rather to understand how we can prevent atrocities in the future…It is impossible not to be moved and inspired by what each of them has been able to accomplish despite the tragedies they have endured” Michael Pertnoy, the film’s Co-Director
The screening which coincides with Indigenous Remembrance Day will open with an audio of the powerful and moving track ‘Land’ by Spoken Word Artist Joel McKerrow as a tribute to Australia’s indigenous past. Performance poet, radio host, and co-organiser of the Stillwaters Storytelling Collective, Sista Zai, will also be performing a moving tribute to survival, created specifically for the event.
Come along and witness stories of courage, survival and change and support the local organisations working at the coalface to assist asylum seekers in our community. Representatives from Hotham Mission and the The Asylum Seekers Resource Centre (ASRC) will be available to share how you can support Melbourne’s growing refugee population and take action to make a difference. Also find out what’s on during the upcoming Refugee Week in June including World Refugee Day Rally 17th June. Guest MC for the night is Tina Jensen of YouBloodyRipper.com.
